What Is Business Energy?
Business energy is the commercial energy your company uses to operate, bought on a business contract instead of a household tariff. Rates are quoted for your premises, contracts usually run for a fixed term, and there is no price cap. Each supply is contracted separately.
Why Compare Business Energy Suppliers?
Comparing the market can cut your costs and protect you from default rates.
- Your renewal quote is one price, not the market: Comparing business energy deals shows what other suppliers would charge you.
- Out-of-contract rates cost more: If your contract ends and you don't agree a new one, you're moved onto a higher default rate.
- New premises start on deemed rates: If you move in and use energy without a contract, you're placed on an expensive default rate until you agree one.
- There is no price cap: Business energy prices aren't capped, so the deal you choose matters.

Business Energy Prices and Rates
Business energy rates differ from one business to the next. Your quote depends on:
- Unit rate (price per kWh) and standing charge.
- Annual usage and business size.
- Contract length and type.
- Location and meter type.
- Network and policy charges.
- Climate Change Levy (CCL) and VAT, where they apply.
- Your business credit standing.
Always compare the total annual cost, not just the unit rate. A low unit rate can be cancelled out by a high standing charge.
Business Energy Tariffs
These are the main contract types you'll see in a business energy comparison.
The price stays the same for the whole term. Best for predictable budgets.
The price follows the market, so it can rise or fall.
More control over buying, but costs can move.
Supply matched with renewable generation.
Several premises on one contract and one invoice.
Default rates with no agreed contract. Usually the most expensive.
Who Are the Best Business Energy Suppliers?

There is no single answer. The best business energy supplier for you depends on your usage, location and meter, so we compare the market instead of recommending a favourite. Need a specific provider? Ask us and we'll check.
Business Energy for Micro, Small, Medium and Large Businesses
Your size changes your price. Larger users usually pay less per unit, while smaller sites often pay more, so comparing matters at every size. Here is a rough guide to annual cost:
| Business Size | Example Annual Usage (illustrative) | Estimated Electricity Cost | Estimated Gas Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro business | Up to 5,000 kWh | Around £1,200 | Around £260 |
| Small business | Up to 15,000 kWh | Around £3,600 | Around £780 |
| Medium business | Up to 25,000 kWh | Around £6,000 | Around £1,290 |
| Large business | Up to 50,000 kWh | Around £12,100 | Around £2,590 |
Estimates use the UK average non-domestic price including CCL (24.14p per kWh electricity, 5.17p per kWh gas, Q1 2026, DESNZ Quarterly Energy Prices). Smaller sites often pay more per unit than the average, and your quote will also include standing charges and VAT. Compare live for your real figures.
We compare small business energy prices from the same 30+ suppliers, with quotes matched to your usage.
When Should You Switch?
Start looking 3 to 6 months before your contract ends. Most energy switches complete within 5 to 14 working days. For a quote, have your business address, meter numbers (MPAN and MPRN) and a recent bill ready. We'll also need a signed Letter of Authority so we can act for you.
Stuck in a Fixed Contract?
In many cases you can leave early without a penalty. We review your contract, speak to your supplier and, where you qualify, obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Not every contract qualifies, and we'll be honest about that from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions
1Do I need separate contracts for business electricity and gas?
Yes. Each supply has its own contract, rates and end date. You can buy both from one supplier, but it isn't always cheaper, so we compare each fuel on its own.
2Can I switch business energy supplier if I'm on a fixed-term contract?
Yes, but usually only when your contract ends. You can agree a new deal early and start it on your end date. Leaving sooner may mean exit fees or a supplier objection, so we check your contract first.
3Who is the cheapest business energy supplier?
It depends on your usage, location, meter and contract, and it changes with the market. A live comparison shows who is cheapest for your business today, with all quotes side by side.
4What are MPAN and MPRN numbers?
An MPAN identifies your electricity meter and an MPRN your gas meter. Both appear on your bill. Send us a recent bill and we'll find them for you.
5Why is my gas bill in kWh when my meter shows cubic metres?
Gas meters measure volume, but you're billed in kWh. Your supplier converts the reading using a calorific value and correction factor. Check your bill shows kWh and the conversion used.
6What is a half-hourly meter?
It records electricity use every 30 minutes and is common at larger sites. It can come with higher standing charges, so ask why you're on one and compare quotes before you sign.
7Is the Climate Change Levy charged on business gas and electricity?
CCL applies to most business electricity and gas, though some uses are exempt or reduced. It's charged per kWh on top of your rate. Check your eligibility with HMRC or your accountant.
8How often should I send meter readings?
Monthly, or whenever your supplier asks, to avoid estimated bills and catch-up charges. Take a photo of the meter each time so you have proof if a bill is ever disputed.
9Can I get a smart meter for my business?
Often yes, and many suppliers offer one. It sends readings automatically, which helps avoid estimated bills. Ask about install timing and any charges before you agree.
10What should I do when I move into new business premises?
Take meter readings on day one and contact the current supplier to start a change of tenancy. Then agree a contract quickly to avoid expensive default rates.
